Birthday Meat
January 29, 2007, 7:38 amWe went out to eat for my birthday. We went to the yakiniku shop over by Kamatori station. Yakiniku is where they serve you plates full of strips of meat and you cook them yourself on a little barbecue grill in the middle of the table, then dip them in tasty sauces until you’re so full you can’t move. People say it’s Korean food, but who knows?
I didn’t realize it at first, but they have a birthday special! You get 1) an extra plate of Kalbi or karbi or karubee or whatever meat, 2) tickets for 1,000 yen off (NEXT visit, the chintzy bastards!), and 3) a polaroid picture of you smiling with your beer in your hand and the other hand doing the V for victory or whatever other pose you wanna do.

You Smell
January 26, 2007, 12:59 amAnother great mystery of life in Japan: Where do you get deodorant? It sounds like a silly, petty thing to ponder, but it’s a very real problem if you live here for an extended period of time. Deodorant is just one of those things that you don’t see anywhere. It’s almost impossible to find.
If you ask somebody at the store for deodorant, they’ll show you a bunch of girly spray cans, and you’ll think maybe their making fun of you for some reason. If you are actually desperate enough to buy one of these girly pink spray cans, you will take it home and use it and find that it doesn’t really work, but makes you smell vaguely like a flower.

Dog, Please; Hold The Onions
January 24, 2007, 3:28 pmIn Japan, Subway is pretty much the same as back in the states. The only difference is that they have a few different flavors:

I found it to be stringy and tough. But, the cool thing is that you can get whatever breed you want. The sandwich artist has them all in the little bins. My personal fave is pomeranian.
