Nova In Trouble - So Long, Bastards

This is just classic. Check this out…

… that’s some heavy prose, man. I can really feel ya. Actually, it’s a note from the president of Nova (Mr. Sahashi) to all the teachers in psuedo-explanation/excuse for why they haven’t been paid. The dark clouds, times of trouble, the light of dawn peeping through a crack in the gray, etc. etc., uhhh, we’ll get the money to you soon, mkay? (more…)

“But not you, you can’t do English. You’re too STUPID.

That’s right, TOO STUPID.”

This is what the teacher was saying to the kid, who looked back up at him with big round watery eyes. It was a scene out of an afterschool special. The kid’s autistic, he scribbles on his paper, he runs around the room and only half-understands what is going on all the time.

“This one here, he’s too stupid. Maybe you shouldn’t bother with him.”

I wondered if this kid’s parents knew that the pre-school they paid good (more…)

National holidays are the worst…

Here’s my schedule for the day…

!0:00 - Toke (pronounced like “to-kay”, not “toke” unfortunately); 8 minutes by train; a rambunctious 6 year old boy who can only relate to the world through catching insects;

11:00 - also Toke; a salaryman who is too busy to improve his English, but he pays me to talk to him for an hour. His katakana pronunciation makes me cringe, but he has a funny sense of humor. (more…)

The blue and then grey dawn found us sitting in

a park at a table with tallboy beers and chu-hi’s spread all over. I was partial to the swings, it had been a while since I’d swung, and everybody watched me with tight clutched stomaches, all that beer and izakaya food sitting on the surface uneasily. There was a guy sitting there, his head in his hands, dressed normally like a jogger or one of the early morning walkers, but he looked somehow distressed or upset about something, he was quietly sitting there, thinking about things. There were others who came into the park, looked at us, went on… they were going to work some of them, that quick stiff walking of early morning work going (more…)
