12/29 Smokin’ Boogie show review
December 30, 2007, 11:12 amThere’s this tradition in Japan, one of its many traditions that I think is brilliant and wonderful, and it’s called “bo-nen-kai.” This is a forget-the-year binge drinking session held around New Years. Now, it’s bo-nen-kai season, which means that old men on the trains are drunker than usual, and you often see people with their heads in the flowers retching for all they’re worth. It’s a beautiful time of year. The show last night at Smokin’ Boogie, a tiny but very cool roots rock club located in Shinjuku’s gay town, was a rock and roll bo-nen-kai. Which basically means that everyone was drunk before the show even started… the way it should be.

December 29, 2007, 9:31 amI just came across this on Japan Probe and thought it was hilarious…
…okay, okay, so that’s rude, but it’s funny because of all the westerners here in Japan who don’t know that people here speak Japanese, not English. It doesn’t say “no foreigners allowed,” it just offers a little encouragement, “try Japanese.” Anyway, it made me chuckle.
