Mormons

I saw them when I was coming up the platform. Even from the back, without seeing their dopey little nametags, I knew they weren’t English teachers. There’s just something in the manner. They were standing there talking to two Indian guys. Okay, I don’t know that they were Indian, maybe they were Pakistani, or some other type of south Asian. But, they were smiling, nodding, and talking with the chosen ones.

I came up and sat down. By some chance, one song ended on my walkman and there were three or so painful seconds of silence where I had to hear their conversation. At first, there was an awkward silence, and you could hear the wheels in their heads turning, what to say next, what to say next, what to say n- (more…)

Old People Can Sometimes Be Wicked Treacherous Bitches

The Baby’s Mine After All

June 25, 2008, 10:26 am

Well, we went to the doc today and everything is a-ok with our little unborn precious one. She is weighing in at 3.2 kilograms, or grams, or something or other (like most of my countrymen I never quite mastered the simplest measurement system on earth), which means she is big for her age (-2 weeks). She is ready to come out at any time, and the doctor gave us this bit of startling news…

“She looks like she’s half-western, definitely.”

…the doctor said. This was a great comfort to me. If she were half-black, or half-something else, or fully Japanese, I’d have cause for worry. I couldn’t tell if it were a joke or not, but I just laughed anyway. I usually do that when I don’t understand fully what somebody said, or when everybody else starts laughing (more…)
