The Studio

May 16, 2008, 3:15 pm

Recording is either 1) the most awesome thing in the fucking universe, or 2) a terrible stress on your body, mind and personal relationships. At best it’s making a digital disc containing all the cool shit you and your good friends came up with. At worst, it’s hitting a snare drum for twenty minutes while the engineer “tweaks” shit, or playing the same goddam song over and over again until you never wanna hear it again… then going into the control room to … hear it again. Ugh.

Nah, what am I complaining about, it’s great fun, way cooler than working. “I can’t complain but sometimes I do…” who said that? Oh yeah, Joe Walsh. Well, he was onto something there. It’s great but it can be tedious, that’s it I guess. Like touring, studio work is one of the reasons rock stars do drugs. (more…)

Today…

May 14, 2008, 2:28 pm

3 interviews, 3 lessons, 3 “meals” hastily stuffed into the mouth at train stations…

and from tomorrow, 3 action-packed days of recording. There will be laughter, there will be tears, there will be blood, there will be things broken (hopefully not expensive things), and hearing permanently lost. There will be takes upon takes, lyric scribble sessions, quiet tired slurps of beer around the big table, ideas discussed and agreed upon, and tsukemen eaten. At the end we will have a CD.

I got a new snare head, ‘Placements on the phone for inspo (that’s inspo-ration), and tonight I’m gonna get 8 glorious hours of goddam tired sleep.

Studio Diary Part 1

May 8, 2008, 12:47 pm

So, about the studio…

First off, we didn’t actually RECORD anything. What we did do was rehearse there because nobody was using it and so we could get a feel for the place and whatnot, get our shit settled in some way, meet our future recording engineer, a smiley man who goes by the name of “Bu” and wants me to teach him English (in the style of kids’ lessons I assured him, complete with his own poster with elephants and pandas and shit on it for all the stickers he’ll get each day of recording).

By shit settled I mean gear sorted, drink holding surfaces located, a settled in (more…)

Glen Does Mats

April 30, 2008, 9:53 am

The stars are aligned. Everything in the Universe is humming away in perfect order. It’s a time of the Earth’s revolving when amazing, spectacular and unthinkable things are happening. Glen Campbell is covering Replacements on his new album. I couldn’t have fantasized anything cooler than that. He’s doing “Sadly Beautiful,” along with some Tom Petty, Velvet Underground and some silly alternashit which he’ll do so that they’ll sound like real songs. Glen, the hip hick, doing it again. How cool. I’m going to go listen to “Galveston” right now.

Other people are obsessed with Glen Campbell, right? It’s cool to like him, isn’t it? That (more…)
